Perhaps the hemoglobin could be shielded from the virus's attack?  Are there substitute molecules that could also carry oxygen (artificial blood)?  --  Obviously transfusions would work, for a time.  But they carry their own obvious and severe risks (disease transfer, hepatitis, AIDS, etc.) and may simply serve as a viral incubator  --  This information, if correct, means that ventilators aren't really that beneficial, and would explain reported mortality rates of 80% for those who are put on ventilators.  --  They ARE slightly helpful, as are CPAP ventilators  (Warning:  CPAP ventilators more readily aerosolize the virus) in that they increase the level of oxygen in the lungs so as to make it more readily available for uptake by healthy blood cells / functioning hemoglobin.  Just some ideas and observations.... mpg
