Irrespective of the relative strengths of the USN and the Russian Navy, which I am not remotely qualified to comment upon, it seems to me that the paucity of Russian naval bases around the world is going to hobble the country's capability to protect its distant maritime trade and will severely disadvantage it in any limited kinetic conflict with the US short of all-out war.
  3. Russia has allowed the US/NATO to cross so many red lines that there is clearly a growing sense in the collective West that such lines do not exist. There is an argument, of course, that Russia will only confront NATO's provocations once it has completed the SMO. However, I don't believe that the SMO can be completed in the sense of removing NATO's threat to Russia's statehood unless there is an entirely new security architecture in Europe. This would require the complete occupation of 404 and the removal of strategic threats adjacent to Russia's borders (which will be a particularly pressing issue when NATO eventually gets its own hypersonic missiles). Russia has not mobilised nearly enough troops to occupy 404 and/or convince NATO to back off and respect its strategic concerns on a pan-European level. I appreciate there are some labour shortages in parts of Russian industry, and that the leadership wishes to retain as much economic normalcy as possible. Fair enough - but this is the survival of the country we are talking about, and its long-term survival requires more than repelling the much bally-hooed counter-offensive; it requires eliminating NATO's grip on territory adjacent to Russia's borders from which a first-strike could eventually be launched. Russia is not doing enough to convince the west that this is its objective and that its red lines are meaningful.
