The
Origins of Big Brother in the Military/Industrial Complex
Must Read - A
quote...."Behind Winston's back the voice from the telescreen was still
babbling away about pig-iron and the overfulfilment of the Ninth
Three-Year Plan. The telescreen received and transmitted
simultaneously. Any sound that Winston made, above the level of a very
low whisper, would be picked up by it, moreover, so long as he remained
within the field of vision which the metal plaque commanded, he could
be seen as well as heard. There was of course no way of knowing whether
you were being watched at any given moment.
How often, or on what
system, the Thought Police plugged in on any individual wire was
guesswork. It was even
conceivable that they watched everybody all the time. But at any rate
they could plug in your wire whenever they wanted to. You had to live
-- did live, from habit that became instinct -- in the assumption that
every sound you made was overheard, and, except in darkness, every
movement scrutinized." --*
George
Orwell* - 1984, Chapter I, Part I, - bold/italics
by website author.
Gee....you're not wondering
IF
the government is listening to your conversations or watching
you....but instead you now find yourself wondering
WHEN
they're doing so, isn't that just great? Doesn't this all sound
familiar? 1984 was a blockbuster when it was first printed and
for good
reason, the novel regrettably has turned out to be a horribly tragic,
prescient work, of future-fact.
Of course our country didn't immediately descend into the pit of
darkness in 1984; it took a little longer than that to deconstruct what
our forefathers had built. We as a people actually descended into
the pit
sixteen years later in 2000 when our rights to vote for “
our”
representatives were stolen from us, we trod downward even
further the following year when the population of this country
willingly allowed
themselves to be misled by a childishly concocted soap opera called
9/11, we reached rock bottom three years after that, exactly twenty
years
after 1984, during the 2004 elections when many Americans ratified
their newly enacted
slave status, broke their constitutional compact, placed themselves in
chains, renounced their citizenship, sacrificed all their rights, and
became Neo-Romans by willingly going to the polls to vote their nation,
their constitution and their own freedoms out of existence.
America is dead....long live the New Unholy Roman Empire - mpg

Torture,
Secrecy, and the Bush Administration
Must Read - From the
History File - A quote...."The Lilburne case sums up the most
significant of what may be called the “Commonwealth reforms” of
criminal procedure—one of the few legacies of the revolution to survive
the restoration of the monarchy."
"Secrecy was what the Roundheads found most odious about the Stuart
monarchs' justice. Certainly unjust practices accompanied some of our
Puritan forefathers to this country; we can't forget the Salem witch
trials, for instance. But so too, did a healthy contempt for the abuses
practiced by the Stuart monarchs, starting with the notions of torture
and secret courts with secret evidence. The contempt was reciprocal of
course—they say that King Charles' lip would curl at the very mention
of the word “Massachusetts,” and seven of the ten members of the first
graduating class of Harvard—the class of 1642—returned to England to
enlist in the Model Army and fight against the King. The practice of
secret courts. The use of torture to secure confessions. The receipt of
secret evidence. The exclusion of the public from proceedings. The
offering of evidence in the form of summaries delivered to the judges,
without the defendant being able to confront the evidence or conduct a
cross-examination. These practices were the definition of tyrannical
injustice to the Puritan fathers and the Founding Fathers. We thought
them long-banished a hundred years and more before our own revolution.
And now suddenly here they are again. "
As you read this article and the rights described within its text, just
keep reminding yourself that many of your fellow citizens renounced
these
rights, treated them as if they were unimportant, of no consequence
whatsoever and effectively gave them up for what amounts to fairy tales
and a few pieces of silver. - mpg

b.) Americans are too stupid to make sense of the complex geopolitical

c.) Americans are too stupid to know they are too stupid to make sense

The
latest revelations of lawbreaking, torture and extremism
Must Read - A
quote...."Much outrage has been provoked by the generally excellent New
York Times article this morning revealing the Bush administration's
recent violations of legal restrictions on the use of torture and other
"severe interrogation techniques." And, in one sense, the outrage is
both understandable and appropriate. Today's revelations involve the
now-familiar, defining attributes of this administration -- claims of
limitless presidential power, operating in total secrecy and with no
oversight, breaking of laws at will, serial misleading of the Congress
and the country and, most of all, the shattering of every previous
moral and legal constraint on our national behavior. - But in
another, more important, sense, this story reveals nothing new. As a
country, we've known undeniably for almost two years now that we have a
lawless government and a President who routinely orders our laws to be
violated. His top officials have been repeatedly caught lying outright
to Congress on the most critical questions we face. They have argued
out in the open that the "constitutional duty" to defend the country
means that nothing -- including our "laws" -- can limit what the
President does.

Who

A quote...."When George Bush and Dick Cheney talk about their plans to

the former official went on, "Cheney doesn't give a rat's ass about the
Republican worries, and neither does the President." - I
recently spoke with Hersh, whose new piece, "Target Iran," is featured
in The New Yorker this week. - When I asked Hersh who wants to
bomb Iran, he said, "Ironically there is a lot of pressure coming from
Democrats. Hillary Clinton, Obama, and Edwards have all said we cannot
have a nuclear-armed Iran. Clearly the pressure from Democrats is a
reflection of - we might as well say it - Israeli and Jewish input." He
added the obvious: "a lot of money comes to the Democratic campaigns"
from Jewish contributors."

says that the Iraqi government has made a $100 mn. deal with China for
the purchase of light weaponry,
especially AK-47 assault rifles. Some observers are afraid that these
arms will actually end up in the hands of sectarian militiamen or
anti-government guerrillas, through graft or theft or because much of
the Iraqi police and army is made up of militiamen. The Iraqi
government maintains that the US arming of its police and army is not
going fast enough and that large numbers of policemen are essentially
unarmed for lack of equipment. (It is, however, alleged that large
numbers of policemen sold off their weapons and even ammunition in the
face of grinding poverty and salary arrears)."
"Stung,
Secretary of Defense Robert Gates pledged to speed up US arms
deliveries to the Iraqis. My
guess is that this is a step toward Iraqi government independence of
the US military, and that the US military is deliberately going slow on
providing some kinds of equipment because it still does not trust the
Iraqis. - Also, President Jalal Talabani and PM Nuri al-Maliki
are desperately afraid of the new Sunni Arab tribal levies that the US
military is creating and the arming of which it is facilitating, and
the Chinese arms for Kurdish and Shiite troops may be an answer to the
US-sponsored "Awakening" groups."

Putin
touches the pawn and wins: Putin to become Russian PM?
A quote..."Vladimir Putin has confounded all predictions by saying he
would head United Russia's federal list at the State Duma elections in
December, and might become prime minister in 2008."
In other words Putin is to remain head of Russia. Considering how
he's handled his duties so far and brought Russia back from the brink
of utter destitution, impoverishment and national humiliation, it's
great news for Russia...however it’s not such great news for democracy.
Or should one say a "well managed, smoothly functioning system of true
democracy"
It appears Putin has decided that authoritarianism under his
demonstrably better leadership is a heck of a lot better than the
catastrophic Yeltsin years of non-stop
klepto-crony-oligarchic-capitalism (a.k.a. Neo-Liberalism) which was
imposed on Russia by the US's elites as their version of "
shock
therapy" ** (remember
shock
and awe**) to "
help"
(a word
that from now on when used by
anyone
from the US shall cause feelings
of fear and loathing in those who hear it) Russia in an obvious and
blatant attempt to break that country apart in an effort to steal it's
natural resources.
And he has already been proven to be correct in that judgment.
But he's just one man
who so far has
made some brilliant decisions with a great deal of help from his loyal
followers (mostly former KGB). He, himself however, is not "
a system" which
can spread risk, promote stability during political transitions and
encourage the inclusion of dissenting voices even if he "
as a single individual" diligently
does so while he remains in office.
In other words there are grave risks - either way - in going down this
road and one should therefore always remember two very time worn, but
true, cautions. Power corrupts (always) and absolute power
corrupts absolutely....and the road to hell is paved with good
intentions. – mpg

Plain
and Simple: Nothing But Ouster Will Stop Bush-Cheney Torture Regime
A quote...."They lie about it because they want to torture people.
That's the first thing you must understand: They want to do it. They
enjoy the thought of it. They want to hear the details, they want to
hear about the pain, about the broken spirits and the ruined minds.
They literally, physically – perhaps even sexually – enjoy the idea of
people getting beaten, tormented and waterboarded at their command.
There's no question about this.
Bush tortured
animals when he was a child, and now he tortures human beings with
the same kind of furtive, sniggering, naughty glee. And when someone
catches him at it, he lies about it, just like a brattish child. And
now the whole administration of the United States government operates
on the degraded moral level of this profoundly stunted and twisted
little wretch."
How
Rumsfeld Micromanaged Torture - "Make Sure This Happens!!"
A quote...."When Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld boasted, as he
did frequently, of his unrelenting focus on the war on terror, his
audience would have been startled, maybe even shocked, to discover the
activities that Rumsfeld found it necessary to supervise in minute
detail. Close command and control of far away events from the Pentagon
were not limited to the targeting of bombs and missiles. Thanks to
breakthroughs in communications, the interrogation and torture of
prisoners could be monitored on a real time basis also."
Is that what they call it...."
close
command and control"? For
years there have been a lot of jokes on the web to the effect that
maybe those sickos in the White House really enjoyed this stuff, that
they enjoyed watching those videos from Gitmo, Abu Ghraib and the other

it's not funny anymore. One would hope all you "Neo-Romans" in

Trial Illegal, Watada Argues
A quote...."Lawyers turn to federal judges in Seattle to stop new
court-martial. - Lawyers for Fort Lewis 1st Lt. Ehren Watada, who in
June 2006 went public with his refusal to serve in Iraq and said the
war is illegal, asked the U.S. District Court in Seattle on Wednesday
to halt his court-martial, which is only days away. - Watada's second
court-martial is slated to begin Tuesday. His first court-martial
earlier this year ended in a mistrial before a jury could deliberate."
Will
the Watada Mistrial Spark an End to the War?
Absolutely brilliant, Watada's conscience and his lawyer tied up the
case into procedural knots because of the army's own hypocrisy.
Neither the court nor the army wanted to discuss the illegality of the
war, but.... "prosecutors wanted the judge to find that Watada had
agreed to pretrial stipulations that he had violated his duty when he
refused to show up for movement to Iraq", "Watada maintained that his
refusal to participate in an illegal war in Iraq was justified, indeed
required, under the Army's own Uniform Code of Military Justice."
As a consequence of the pure, unalterable, irresistible logic of
Watads's principled stance, the issue of the illegality of the
war was forced into the proceedings and openly discussed in the
courtroom, violating the Judge's own prior rulings not to discuss the
issue and therefore causing a mistrial. - mpg -

uncertain value; and financial middlemen extract exorbitant returns at
the expense of the real economy....".

up a provision calling for lower numbers of U.S. forces. But a close
parsing of the statement shows that Abawi and the government of Iraq
are seeking to replace the existing United Nations–sponsored pact
permitting U.S.-led forces in Iraq, establishing in its place a
long-term, bilateral security agreement directly between Iraq and the
United States. And while the proposed details have yet to emerge,
similar U.S. agreements with other nations in the region — including
Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar —
have all involved a 10-year "protection" period, at minimum.
- The exact parameters of the deals for each country are

protection contracts saying that the United States will guarantee the
security of a signatory country. In return, the United States is

drugs from Colombia to El Chapo's headquarters in Mexico. -
A number of oddities commend this incident to our respectful attention,
not least among them the plane's history: The European press has
reported that this same Gulfstream II, tail number N987SA, took part in
the CIA's controversial "rendition" program, which transported
prisoners to torture-friendly lands."

Weak dollar
prompts record foreign buyouts of U.S. companies
Some quotes...."BOSTON: European, Asian and Canadian companies are
taking advantage of the weaker dollar to buy their U.S. counterparts at
a record pace, increasing investment in the United States but also
raising fears about a potential loss of jobs and autonomy."
This is the key quote...."Nationally, the value of purchases of
companies by non-U.S. buyers so far this year totaled $257.4 billion -
more than in any full
year since 2000, the height of the technology boom, according to
Thomson Financial, a research firm in New York." - bold/italics by

PARAGUAY:
Hunger Follows Worst Fires in History
A quote...."ASUNCION, Oct 3 (IPS) - Food shortages and hunger in the
northern Paraguayan provinces of Concepción and San Pedro have
followed the worst fires in this country’s history, which destroyed
over one million hectares of crops and forestland and left nearly
50,000 people homeless and eight dead."

Use
Economic Sanctions Against Our Own Government
Must Read - A
quote...."There are ways that we can take the money out of their hands.
One way is to get the politicians that vote for funding this war out of
the government. That includes Democrats as well as Republicans. We need
to send an unmistakable message to Congress that we will no longer
condone funding the war of aggression against another nation. We can
also refuse to buy products that are advertised on the mainstream media
that supports the government “spin” on this war."
Shun them, do not do business with them, have no commerce with them, do
not converse with them, do not shelter them,

A quote...."On September 18, 2007, three days after members of the
pro-war Gathering of Eagles were involved in the verbal, then physical,
attacks on Gold Star Father and war opponent Carlos Arredondo (and to a
much lesser extent myself) at the march in DC, the pResident, Laura,
Condi, Karen Hughes, and Darth Cheney hosted groups they deem
supporting the troops at a breakfast on the south lawn of the
Whitehouse."

Must Read - A
quote...."10/02/07 "ICH"--- - How many times do we, the people of the
US, have to go around on this queasy-making merry-go-round of
propaganda and militarism before we shout -- enough! -- then shutdown
the whole cut-rate carnival and run the scheming carnies who operate it
out of town? It is imperative the nation's citizens begin to apprehend
the patterns present in this ceaseless cycle of official deceit and
collective pathology. This republic, or any other, cannot survive,
inhabited by a populace with such a slow learning curve."

little consultation, and so little outside review."

Hersh:
Pretext And Targets May Change, But War With Iran Is Still On
Some quotes...."The road to war with Iran runs through Iraq. As Seymour
Hersh reports in the New Yorker, the Bush administration is turning
more and more to the idea that the attempt to pacify Iraq has failed
because of interference by Iran, and hoping this notion will serve as
sufficient pretext for a strike against Iran." -- "
Meanwhile, not having to be re-un-elected
again makes Bush and Cheney even more irresponsible than they were when
they were first un-elected, and makes them even more reckless
than the political capital they claimed they had after they were
re-unelected. It would be a perfect setup for a double-impeachment if
the Democrats wanted any part of it. Alas, they do not." -

Vidal, Gold Star Mother Cindy Sheehan, Pentagon Papers whistleblower
Daniel Ellsberg, retired U.S. Army Colonel Ann Wright, former
Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney, former federal prosecutor Elizabeth de
la Vega, author and radio host Thom Hartmann, Rabbi Michael Lerner,

The
southern axis of evil
A quote...."Ahmadinejad and Chavez have already met six times, in both
Iran and Venezuela. Their economic and energy deals - on oil
refineries, petrochemicals, the auto industry - amount to $17 billion,
and counting. Iranian diplomats were ecstatic. Chavez' tacit support
for the "peaceful use of nuclear energy" is considered "very important"
- a counterpunch to the heavy pressure of the US and the European
Union. The overwhelming majority of Latin American governments -
including President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in Brazil, who has very
good relations with the Bush administration - regard Iran's nuclear
program as a totally legitimate path to generate electricity. "

Belgium
threatened with break-up
A quote...."Nearly four months after the general election, Belgium is
still without a new government. King Albert has called for a second
time on Flemish Christian Democrat leader Yves Leterme to try and form
a government, two months after his first attempt stalled. There are
indications that the deep-seated political divisions are developing
towards a crisis that threatens the country’s very existence. Polls
suggest that two thirds of people in the Dutch-speaking north of the
country expect Belgium to break up."
Russia

Back
From the Hack, and Once More Into the Breach
A quote...."As all the world knows – oh, all right, as a handful of
people in the world knows – over the weekend we were savagely hacked,
yet again, by the enemies of truth and enlightenment. (That is the
current term of art for political hackers, isn't it?) This was in fact
the worst hack yet, a most expert and sophisticated operation that
penetrated some very heavy security and wreaked enormous damage,
essentially wiping out the entire site. It was the precise equivalent
of firebombing a newspaper or printing press whose works displeased
some powerful entity or individual."

When the

A quote...." The investment world assumes that central banks can always
paper over and liquidity crisis in the financial markets, and will. But
what if the problem is not liquidity in general but insolvency in a
capital market? It is not that there is not sufficient fiat money in
general. The problem is that in a highly leveraged market there are no
buyers at yesterday's prices, when yesterday's prices were the basis of
the existence of a flow of new funds into this market."
Exactly
How the Good Guys Finally Won
A quote...."The leaders of today's Congress have made clear through
numerous lobby visits that unless we can produce polls that show
congressional elections in November 2008 hang on the question of
impeachment, nobody's going to be impeached. Bush and Cheney can
continue to ignore subpoenas, spy illegally, kidnap, torture, murder,
and rewrite laws. They can launch another illegal war. They can rig the
elections. They could barbeque babies on the White House lawn. It
doesn't matter. They will not be impeached."
